What is Save Our Babies?
- A program created by the Orange County Healthy Start Coalition
in 2001 to reduce racial disparities in birth outcomes
- A nontraditional outreach method targeting hair/nail salons
and churches to spread the message that Black babies are dying
and what can be done about it
Why was Save Our Babies Created?
- Fact: Black babies are 2.5 times more likely to die within
their first year of life than White babies
- Fact: Twice as many Black babies as White babies are born
too small or too soon
- Fact: Minority women often do not start their prenatal care
within the first three months of pregnancy or go for prenatal
care at all
What are Our Goals?
- Educate the community on maternal and child health issues
- Utilize referral resources and "bridge" the gaps
in services for all women
- Provide training and support to minority businesses, community
leaders, and consumers about Save Our Babies and the services
available in the community
How Can You Help?
- Encourage every pregnant woman to start prenatal care early
and continue her prenatal care
- Encourage all childbearing age women to take folic acid daily
and lead a healthy lifestyle
- Talk to family, friends, and neighbors about Save Our Babies
and the Healthy Start Program
- Post or distribute Save Our Babies information in your community/business
- Invite someone from Save Our Babies to speak to your group
- Donate to Save Our Babies to continue the program
Saving
babies is our bottom line!
